US Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Friday called for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip during a conversation with “Israeli” Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, emphasizing that escalating tensions in the Middle East serve no one's interests.

"The Secretary reaffirmed the US’ ironclad commitment to Israel’s security and discussed how escalation is in no party’s interest," State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller said.

Blinken underscored the urgency of securing a ceasefire that would facilitate the release of hostages, enable a surge in humanitarian aid, and foster broader regional stability.

He also highlighted the importance of a diplomatic solution that allows families in both “Israel” and Lebanon to return to their homes.

In a separate call with Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi, Blinken discussed measures to de-escalate regional tensions and prevent further aggression.

Miller noted that Blinken stressed the necessity of concluding a ceasefire agreement and warned against any actions that could undermine the prospects for peace.

The renewed diplomatic push comes as Egypt, Qatar, and US mediators have urged “Israel” and Hamas to resume negotiations in Doha or Cairo next week.

The call for talks follows a devastating escalation that has resulted in the deaths of nearly 40,000 Palestinians, including many women and children.
